Your Korean Friend’s Mom Eats Here.
This was the tagline of Shabu Shabu, Montreal’s oldest and only authentic Korean restaurant located on Saint-Jacques Street. Sadly, after decades of serving up traditional Korean dishes, this iconic eatery officially closed its doors last April 9, 2023.
Montreal’s food scene has always been known for its diversity and multicultural influences. From French classics to poutine, there is something for everyone in the city. However, until recently, there was only one restaurant where locals could experience authentic Korean cuisine: Shabu Shabu.
Founded by a Korean couple in the early 2000s, Shabu Shabu quickly became a staple in Montreal’s food scene. From the beginning, the restaurant stood out for its authenticity, as it was the only establishment that served traditional Korean dishes prepared with authentic ingredients and cooking techniques.
Over the years, Shabu Shabu became a beloved spot for Montrealers looking to explore Korean cuisine. Locals and tourists alike were drawn to the restaurant’s authentic flavours and cozy atmosphere, which felt like a home away from home. The restaurant’s owners were always warm and welcoming, greeting customers with a smile and making them feel like part of the family.
Shabu Shabu’s menu was extensive, offering everything from classic Korean BBQ, to hotpots, stews, fried chicken, and noodle dishes. Some of the most popular dishes on the menu included the Haemul Pajeon, a savoury pancake made with scallions, mussels, clams, shrimps, and squid; the Mandoo, deliciously steamed dumplings filled with pork and vegetables; and the Takoyaki, made with batter and octopus.
One of the most beloved dishes on the menu was the Ddukbaegi Bulgogi, a hearty stew made with marinated beef, sweet potato noodles, mushrooms, carrots, onions, and scallions, served in a hot stone pot. Another must-try dish was the Tonkatsu, a crispy and juicy breaded pork cutlet served with a refreshing cabbage salad and fries.
No Korean meal is complete without Bibimbap, and Shabu Shabu’s Dolsot Bibimbap was a standout dish. Served in a hot stone bowl, the dish consisted of rice, vegetables, and your choice of protein, topped with a runny egg, and mixed together for the perfect blend of flavours and textures.
For those looking for something spicy and comforting, the Kimchi Chigae was a popular choice. This flavorful stew, made with kimchi, beef, vegetables, and tofu, was perfect for warming up on a cold Montreal day. Another delicious stew was the Soondoobu Chigae, made with silky tofu, vegetables, egg, and your choice of seafood, pork or beef.
And of course, no mention of Shabu Shabu would be complete without highlighting their extensive selection of Korean drinks. From traditional sweet rice punch called Sikhye to the refreshing plum tea, Masil Cha, and the spicy persimmon, cinnamon, and ginger punch, Soo Jeong Gwa, there was something for everyone. And let’s not forget about Soju, the popular Korean distilled spirit that pairs perfectly with any hot meal.
In addition to serving authentic Korean cuisine, Shabu Shabu was a shining example of the success of family-owned enterprises. The establishment was truly a family affair, with the children of the Korean family who owned the restaurant pitching in with everything from cooking and cleaning to waiting tables. This family-centered approach to running a business added to the restaurant’s charm and made it a special place for many.
While we bid farewell to Shabu Shabu, we can still celebrate its legacy by seeking out other authentic Korean restaurants in the city. Montreal’s Korean food scene has grown in recent years, with new restaurants offering everything from Korean fried chicken to Kimchi Chigae. However, the closure of Shabu Shabu is a reminder of the importance of preserving authentic cuisine, and supporting family-owned businesses.
In a world where fusion cuisine and fast food dominate, it’s easy to forget the value of traditional, home-style cooking. Shabu Shabu was a beacon of authenticity in Montreal’s food scene, and its legacy will not be forgotten. As we move forward, let’s remember the importance of preserving culinary traditions and supporting the small, family-owned businesses that make our communities special.
Shabu Shabu may have closed its doors, but its legacy lives on as the first and only authentic Korean restaurant in Montreal. And with their catchy slogan Your Korean Friend’s Mom Eats Here, we’ll always remember the restaurant’s commitment to delivering traditional and delicious Korean cuisine. Shabu Shabu, you will be soup-er missed! Thank you for spicing up our taste buds with your authentic Korean cuisine and unforgettable dining experience.
