As I sit down to write the final chapter of my series, Obrigada, Portugal, a wave of nostalgia washes over me. These past couple of months have been a whirlwind of experiences, beginning with my unforgettable trip to Portugal in the first two weeks of August and continuing through the privilege of sharing my Portugal adventures with you.
Portugal has truly captured my heart, and as I reflect on my time here, it’s the small, intimate memories, the cherished details that stand out most vividly. Join me on this journey as I revisit some of the unforgettable moments, the tiny treasures that have left an indelible mark on my heart.
A Ceramic Symphony
The memory takes me back to Portugal’s vibrant artistic spirit, revealing itself in enchanting ways. In places like Lisbon, the streets transform into a lively canvas of colourful ceramic patterns. Hand-painted tiles adorn building facades, narrating tales of the nation’s history and culture. From depictions of maritime expeditions to intricate geometric designs, every corner becomes a visual treat. Strolling through these neighbourhoods felt like wandering through an open-air gallery.
The allure of ceramic artistry isn’t confined to the city alone. In Sintra, the palaces transport you to a realm of enchantment. Their walls, both inside and out, are adorned with meticulously crafted ceramic tiles, known as azulejos. Each tile tells a story, whether it’s a depiction of a historical moment, a pastoral scene, or an intricate floral motif. This artistry stands as a testament to Portugal’s profound connection with its artistic legacy, leaving anyone who beholds it in awe of the craftsmanship and dedication woven into these masterpieces.
The ceramic artistry isn’t just static displays; it’s a living testament to the vitality of Portugal’s cultural heritage. As I explored Lisbon and Sintra, I couldn’t help but marvel at the creativity and passion that goes into every tile, the painstaking process of shaping, glazing, and painting to bring these works of art to life. These intricate patterns connect me with Portugal’s artistic soul, transcending language and culture. The vibrant azulejos speak a universal language of beauty and creativity, inviting all who behold them to appreciate the unique artistic essence that defines Portugal. Not to mention how beautifully the ceramic plates, bowls, and tea cups graced local markets – if only I could bring them all home!

From Fear to Friendship
The memory takes me back to the day I arrived at my host family’s home in Belas. I remember a rush of emotions as the car came to a stop. I had traveled far from home to explore Portugal, and now I stood before a new chapter. As I opened the gate to their home, there, in the yard, stood a big, imposing dog, named Pinky. Her bark was enough to startle anyone. I was terrified, and for a heartbeat, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to step inside.
But something amazing happened as the days went by. Pinky, with her big, expressive brown eyes and a tail that wagged non-stop, began to soften. Every morning, as the first light peeked through the curtains, Pinky would come bounding towards my room with excitement. She’d gently nudge me, her soft, wet nose pressing against my hand or cheek. And if I didn’t stir immediately, she would simply lie down next to my bed, her warm presence a comforting reminder of our newfound friendship.
It was a heartwarming reminder that even when things seem scary at first, they can turn into the most beautiful and unexpected friendships. Pinky became a cherished companion during my time in Portugal, a testament to the transformative power of trust and connection. As I prepared to leave, the thought of returning home without her by my side, no one to wake me up with a nudge or to lay next to my bed, made me a little sad. She had become a vital part of my Portugal adventure, and the thought of her absence left a gap that only a dear furry friend could fill.

The Ocean’s Embrace
The memory takes me back to Praia Grande in Sintra, where the sun bathed the sandy beach in a warm, golden hug. The sand beneath my feet was so soft and welcoming, urging me to walk along the water’s edge. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean, softly rocking, felt like they were telling tales from faraway shores.
As I strolled along the shore, the sand gave way beneath my steps, while the salty smell of the sea mixed with the ocean breeze. Seagulls flew above, their calls blending with the sounds of the coast. The water looked too inviting to resist. My friends and I, we dashed towards the ocean. But the moment we dipped our toes into the chilly Atlantic, a shiver ran through us. The water was freezing.
But still, the thrill of the moment overcame the initial chill, and laughter filled the air as we splashed and played. The cold water didn’t matter anymore. Each splash and chase etched a memory in our hearts, simple yet everlasting.
The sun hung high in the sky, painting the day with vibrant colours. Reluctantly, we left the ocean’s embrace, returning to the sandy shore, drenched but with hearts full. This memory, made of warm sands, icy waters, and shared laughter with dear friends, is a testament to the magic of simple moments. It’s a reminder that, sometimes, the most powerful memories are created from the littlest things in life.

The Escalator Wisdom
The memory takes me back to the day I found myself at the Corte Inglés Mall in Lisbon. It was one of those moments where you’re a little lost in an unfamiliar place, trying to navigate your way through the bustling aisles and escalators in search of the market section.
Navigating the escalators, the endless back-and-forth felt like being trapped in a never-ending maze. There were shoppers everywhere, their arms laden with large shopping bags and mouth watering snacks. I tried to asking for help, but everyone spoke Portuguese. And I tried scouring the Mall for maps, but they seemed to be playing a strange game of hide and seek.
Amidst the sensory overload of the mall, something caught my eye. There, on the rim of one of the escalators, in plain, unassuming text, was a message: “For your safety, tie your shoelaces.” I couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight. It was an unexpected and slightly quirky reminder that defied the fast-paced atmosphere surrounding me.
The message was a simple one, offering practical advice that one might overlook in the rush of daily life. But its impact was profound. It struck me as a whimsical, yet profound commentary on the nature of existence itself. In a place where time seemed to slip away, and where the world whirled by at a frenetic pace, here was an invitation to pause, if only for a moment.
In that bustling mall, where everyone seemed to be in a hurry, this humorous and unexpected piece of advice was a gentle nudge to slow down, to notice the little things in life, and to find joy in unexpected places. It was a reminder that sometimes, the most memorable moments are born from the simplest, most unexpected sources.

In Portugal, it’s the little moments that have woven the tapestry of my journey. From the vibrant ceramic patterns gracing the streets of Lisbon to the unexpected friendship with Pinky the dog, the Atlantic’s bracing embrace, and a simple message on an escalator, these are the little fragments that form the most unforgettable memories.
And for all these cherished moments, obrigada, Portugal.
