There’s something magical about Halloween candy, especially when it takes you back to childhood. Whether it’s the smell of chocolate wafting through the house or the thrill of dumping your trick-or-treating haul all over the floor, Halloween candy is a full-on experience.
So as the spooky season creeps up, we thought it’d be fun to reminisce about our favourite Halloween candy growing up.
Alisa’s Favourites
1. Dubble Bubble
The bubble gum that lasts 10 seconds. I remember adding a new piece of gum every 30 seconds just to extend the deliciousness. 5 pieces of gum is definitely a choking hazard for a person, let alone a tiny 8 year-old.
2. Efrutti Mini Burger and Hot Dog Gummi Candies
This was the BEST candy to find in my candy haul. I ate each layer one at a time. I definitely would have called you a monster if you ate these the way you would a real burger.
3. Laffy Taffy
These were fun to get on Halloween because kids would read the jokes on the wrappers to each other. The packaging has since been updated. I’ll still be just as happy to bite into a Laffy Taffy as I was as a child.
4. Starburst Fruit Chews
I think Starbursts were a popular favourite. Of course, I would just eat the pink and red ones and throw the others in my sister’s pile of candy.
5. Maynards Swedish Berries
The other kids would trade their Maynards candies to get the Sour Patch Kids or the Fuzzy Peaches. I, on the other hand, would happily trade for the Swedish Berries.
6. 3 Musketeers
The nougat. ❤️ Need I say more?
Kristina’s Favourites
1. Crunch
How Asian of me that my favourite chocolate is the one with crisped rice. Growing up, they were my dad’s favourite too, and he’d hide them in the top kitchen cabinet. But that didn’t stop me from climbing a chair and sneaking one!
2. Glosette Raisins
I know, I’m kind of a grandma, but I’ve loved chocolate-covered raisins since I was small. And the best part? All my friends hated them growing up, so I got to steal everyone’s Glosettes without a second thought!
3. Nerds
Before the Nerds Gummy Clusters, there were plain Nerds. Fitting, since I’ve always been a bit of a nerd myself (anyone else love reading National Geographic?). Those tiny little rocks were so addictive, with lots of colours, and a super satisfying crunch!
4. Rockets
I can’t think of my childhood without Rockets. You know, that candy that comes in tablet-like rolls with sweet, fruity flavours? It’s weird that I loved candy that felt like medicine, but something about those powdery tablets kept me coming back for more (wait a minute…?).
5. Tootsie Rolls
Another one of my favourites, even though most of my friends thought they were the “old people” candy or just plain weird. I didn’t care. I loved how they tasted like a mix of caramel and taffy, with that chewy, chocolatey flavour that was so different from other sweets.
6. Twizzlers
These were so chewy they sometimes felt like they were going to rip my teeth out, but I couldn’t stop eating them. Whether it was the strawberry or cherry flavour (because the black licorice flavour is just yuck), they were just too delicious.
When it comes to Halloween candy, everyone has their favourites. Whether you’re into chocolate, chewy candy, or something a little more sour, there’s nothing better than indulging in a few (or more than a few!) pieces of your favourite Halloween sweets.
