They say love is about finding someone whose quirks, personality, and values align with yours. And while I don’t believe in a “perfect” checklist for love, there are definitely a few key traits I always look for in a partner.
1. They like to dance—even if they’re not good at it
There’s something special about someone who dances like no one’s watching, especially if they’re not the best at it. Maybe they’re swaying offbeat at a wedding, hyping up their friend at karaoke, or twirling you around the living room. They’re comfortable in their own body, and they’re not worried about what others think. And that kind of confidence, playfulness, and ability to enjoy the moment is exactly the kind of energy I love being around.
2. They have a smile that lights up the room
Some people have a way of making any space feel warmer just by being there. It’s the kind of generous smile and infectious laugh that’s uplifting and caring. The kind of smile that makes strangers feel seen, and the kind of smile that puts a smile on a baby’s face for no reason at all. They’re kind to others, always ready with a joke to brighten the mood, and their energy has a way of spreading joy to everyone nearby.
3. They’ve got just the right amount of stubbornness
People often think stubbornness is a bad thing, but I like to think that just the right amount can actually be a strength. People who were a little stubborn as kids tend to grow up to be people who are confident in their choices, who don’t easily sway from what they believe is right, and who aren’t afraid to stick to their values, even when it’s tough. They can stand their ground, and they don’t just do things because others say so.
4. They think grocery store trips are fun dates
There’s something oddly romantic about strolling through the grocery store aisles, picking out snacks, and debating on which ice cream flavour is the best. I love someone who sees everyday things, like grocery store trips, as little adventures. They find joy in the little things in life, and they don’t need much to have fun. Bonus points if they push the cart while I throw in random things we definitely don’t need.
5. They’d give up the last slice
It’s the little gestures that reveal a lot about someone’s heart. I’ve always admired people who won’t hesitate to give up the last slice of pizza or the final piece of dessert, just because they know it’ll make someone else smile. It’s such a simple, yet profound act of selflessness that shows they genuinely care about others’ happiness. They don’t see giving up that last bite as a sacrifice, but about putting someone else before themselves.
But remember, love isn’t about completing a checklist—it’s about finding someone whose qualities and values align with what matters most to you. When you know what you value, everything else falls into place.
